Sciatica — that sharp, burning pain that shoots from your lower back through your hip and down your leg — affects millions of people. If you’ve had it, you know how debilitating it can be. The good news: most sciatica cases respond extremely well to the right treatment.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a diagnosis — it’s a symptom. It refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg.
The most common causes include:
• Herniated disc pressing on the nerve root
• Piriformis syndrome (a muscle in the buttock compresses the nerve)
• Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
• Degenerative disc disease
The pain can range from mild and occasional to severe and constant, and it’s often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg.
5 Exercises That Help Relieve Sciatica
These exercises should be done gently and without forcing any movement. Stop immediately if pain worsens:
1. KNEE-TO-CHEST STRETCH: Lie on your back, bend one knee and pull it gently toward your chest. Hold 30 seconds. Switch sides. Repeat 3 times each side.
2. PIRIFORMIS STRETCH: Lie on your back, cross your right ankle over your left knee, and gently pull both legs toward your chest. You’ll feel the stretch deep in the right buttock. Hold 30 seconds.
3. SCIATIC NERVE FLOSS: Sit in a chair with good posture. Extend one leg straight out while looking up at the ceiling, then flex the foot and look down. This glides the nerve gently. Do 10 repetitions slowly.
4. BIRD DOG: On all fours, extend your right arm and left leg simultaneously, keeping your core engaged and back flat. Hold 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times each side.
5. WALKING: Simple walking is one of the best activities for sciatica. Aim for 20–30 minutes at a moderate pace. Walking promotes disc hydration and nerve mobility.
What NOT to Do With Sciatica
Just as important as what you should do:
• Don’t rest completely — prolonged bed rest makes sciatica worse
• Don’t do heavy deadlifts or forward bends during a flare-up
• Don’t sit for more than 30–40 minutes without getting up and moving
• Don’t ignore numbness or weakness in the leg — these require immediate evaluation
